Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii)

The highly photogenic structure in Istanbul was the dream project of Sultan Ahmet I, who reigned between 1603 and 1017. You can see the site of his tomb to the north of the Blue Mosque looking at Sultanahmet Park. When framing a photo, be sure to take in the curves of the exterior, including is multiple domes, interspersed with the slender spires of the minarets. The unofficial name of the mosque comes from the blue Iznik tiles which decorate the interior.

Beyoglu Fish Market (Balık Pazarı)

The popular and historic product market of Beyoglu Fish Market is opposite to the entryway to the 1868 Galatasaray Lycée, a highly prestigious institution of learning. For a culinary experience, check the stands which sell items such as mussels fried in sizzling oil (midye tava), seasoned intestines from mutton or lamb which are skewered and grilled above coals ( kokoreç) and other delicacies.

Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı)

The below ground structure is the result of Emperor Justinian's impetus. It was build in 532 and is the largest cistern surviving in İstanbul. The construction relied on 336 columns salvaged from other locations such as ruined temples. Many of the columns have elaborate carved capitals. The Cistern is noted for its symmetry, as well as the scope of its concept. On hot summer days, the grandeur of the depths are a welcome retreat location.

Beyazit Mosque

The second imperial mosque constructed in the city of İstanbul, was Beyazit Camii. The Fatih Camii was the first. The Beyazit Camii was built between 1501 and 1506, under the commission of Beyazit II, who was the son of Mehmet the Conqueror. The design was architecturally similar to Aya Sofya and provides a link to the major mosques such as the Süleymaniye Mosque, which fully adapted the Aya Sofya's style to worship by Muslims.

The Beyazıt Meydanı has had several names. Officially, it is Freedom Square (Hürriyet Meydanı). Under Byzantine control it was known as the Forum of Theodosius. The population of the square today consists of street vendors, flocks of pigeons, İstanbul University students and policemen to watch student activities.
